Altamonte Springs: early ambitions, a lakefront gathering place
Trace the community’s nineteenth-century roots and discover the role of Cranes Roost today.

How it began
Altamonte Springs has a history that predates the busy roads many people associate with it. UCF’s RICHES history collection records Dr. Washington Kilmer’s arrival in 1870, the adoption of the Altamonte Springs name in 1882, and the role of the Altamonte Land, Hotel and Navigation Company in developing the area. Residents voted to incorporate in November 1920.
A place shaped by development
That early mix of land development and hospitality offers a useful starting point for understanding the city. Its story belongs alongside the railroad communities and lakefront settlements elsewhere in Seminole County, each of which grew around different opportunities. The history collection brings together records that help recover the people and places behind the modern name.
Altamonte Springs today
Cranes Roost Park is a prominent community gathering place at Uptown Altamonte. A continuous walkway circles the lake, while a plaza, fountain, tower and the Eddie Rose Amphitheater provide recognizable landmarks. The lakefront offers an introduction to the city that feels different from a drive along its commercial corridors. It is a place to walk, sit and appreciate the setting without needing a particular event on the calendar.
