Longwood: a local history you can still walk through
Meet the early settlers and historic buildings that give Longwood its character.

How it began
John Neill Searcy and Edward Warren Henck arrived in the Longwood area in 1873, traveling to Sanford by steamboat before establishing homesteads. The city’s account also records the Hartley family already living near Fairy Lake. These overlapping stories are a reminder that a community’s beginnings rarely belong to just one person.
The buildings tell the story
Longwood’s Historic District brings several chapters together. The former Longwood Hotel, Christ Episcopal Church, the Inside-Outside House and the Bradlee-McIntyre House are among its distinctive landmarks. Preservation also shaped the district: the latter two houses were moved from Altamonte Springs to Longwood in 1973 to save them from demolition. Their presence tells a story about the people who protected local history as well as those who built it.
Longwood today
A self-guided historic walking tour offers a way to notice details that are easy to miss from a car. Reiter Park provides another community gathering place near the historic center. Visiting the district and park together introduces both the preserved streetscape and the everyday spaces used by residents. Check individual properties before expecting interior access.
