Oviedo: an old community with a new gathering place
From its Lake Jesup-area beginnings to Center Lake Park, discover Oviedo’s story.

How it began
Before the name Oviedo became established, the area was known as the Lake Jesup Community. In 1879, postmaster Andrew Aulin chose Oviedo as the name of the post office, drawing on the city of that name in northern Spain. The new name became part of the surrounding community’s identity. A post office may seem like a small detail, but it gave a growing settlement a name that has endured.
A community with its own identity
Oviedo’s history is distinct from neighboring Winter Springs, even though the two are often grouped together in local conversation. Learning their stories separately helps make sense of a region shaped by connected settlements, changing transportation and later suburban growth.
Oviedo today
Center Lake Park anchors the Oviedo on the Park area. The city lists a lakeside promenade and boardwalk, playground, splash pad, dog park, amphitheater and cultural center among its amenities. Those shared spaces provide a modern gathering place for residents. The older community story and the newer park setting offer two useful starting points for getting to know Oviedo beyond its subdivisions and roads.
