SEMINOLE COUNTY · SANFORD
Sanford: the riverfront that helped build a city
Steamboats, railroads and a historic downtown shaped the Sanford we know today.

How it began
Sanford’s setting on Lake Monroe helps explain its history. During the Seminole Wars, the area was home to Fort Mellon; the settlement of Mellonville followed. Steamboats made the lakefront a place where people and supplies entered Central Florida. Henry Sanford’s land purchase in 1870 helped establish the neighboring town bearing his name. Sanford incorporated in 1877, and Mellonville became part of the city six years later.
What makes it distinctive
The waterfront and historic districts preserve different parts of that story. The city’s history resources include both its commercial district and Historic Georgetown, inviting readers to look beyond storefronts to the people and neighborhoods that helped build Sanford.
Sanford today
The RiverWalk keeps the lakefront central to community life. Downtown’s historic streets and nearby marina offer another way to experience that connection to the water. At the Sanford Museum, exhibits explore riverboats, railroads, agriculture, education and the former Naval Air Station. Together, these places make an introduction to a city whose story is much larger than a single main street.
